book review

Two sisters keep house in a home the entire village regards with open opprobrium; one of them may well have poisoned the family, and Shirley Jackson contrives to have you rooting for them without a flicker of reservation. It is witchy, sly, and considerably colder than it first appears: profoundly on brand for anyone who has ever been pronounced ‘a lot.’
The ‘unlikeable’ woman is frequently nothing more sinister than a woman who has retired from performing harmlessness for people who were never kind to her in the first place.
this is one entry from a wandering list of films, books, shows and albums, kept by someone trying to live a slightly more deliberate life.
