tv review

Lena Dunham’s Brooklyn twenty-somethings, messy and given to a truly Olympian solipsism, are as insufferable as they are unmistakably real. The show was loathed in its moment for precisely the quality that made it good: it refused, apparently on principle, to let its women be aspirational.
One need not be likeable to be worth watching, nor indeed to be worth being. The unflattering truth ages handsomely; the flattering lie rarely survives its own decade.
