The fourth-wall address everyone quotes is not a quirky flourish; it is dissociation with impeccable comic timing. She confides in us precisely so she need never be wholly present in her own life, where the guilt over Boo sits waiting. The entire series is the slow, nearly unbearable business of turning to face the thing she keeps converting into a joke rather than a feeling.

That perpetual commentary in your head, the one transmuting your pain into content: that is the wall itself. I observe this as someone presently typing my pain into a website. We are working on it.
