PEN15

Two grown women cast themselves as their own thirteen-year-old selves opposite genuine adolescents, a conceit that ought to expire after a single joke. Instead it achieves a verisimilitude about girlhood in middle school so exact, so mortifying and so tender that I paused the episode to cringe with my entire body, and then I wept.

what it left me with

The particular humiliations of girlhood were not small. They wired the nervous system you are still administering today. Extend some gentleness to the thirteen-year-old who never quite left the building.

this is one entry from a wandering list of films, books, shows and albums, kept by someone trying to live a slightly more deliberate life.
