book review

Two college friends become entangled with an older married couple, narrated by a consciousness that intellectualizes each sensation to avoid genuine feeling. The novel provokes sharp division; it is deliberately austere, an exacting portrait of the enervation that follows the habitual hedging of one’s true desires behind irony and analysis.
Wit and intellection are formidable armor and corrosive to intimacy. At some juncture one must articulate the plain, unadorned want aloud, however mortifying the exposure.
this is one entry from a wandering list of films, books, shows and albums, kept by someone trying to live a slightly more deliberate life.
