Atwood’s account of a real maid convicted of murder in 1843, and of the doctor who cannot decide whether she is victim, monster, or a performer of whatever role will keep her breathing. Sarah Gadon, with immaculate control, never once grants you certainty.

A woman denied all power learns to become whichever story keeps her safest. Do not mistake the mask assumed for survival for the truth of the woman wearing it.
